Taking Online Courses
The studies seem to be pretty clear that if you are able to schedule your own time, there are benefits from taking on-line courses. In fact, some would argue, that it is actually a preferred method of learning to traditional butt-in-seat classes. Click here for more about that subject.
To get the best of both worlds, try a mix of both. Why? Distance classes rely heavily on written communication. We’ve asked our students to study writing for 10 years; now they actually get to put it in to practice! There are two forms of communicating … speak it or write it. On-line classes give them the practice they need before entering the workplace and written communication skills are in every job. Also, there is a high level of self-teaching that is integrated in distance learning. Becoming a life-long-learner is critical in our information-age-society.
Traditional classes, on the other hand, are a more passive activity. The teacher lectures and students absorb. Usually there is interaction with other students, maybe group projects. Here relationships are formed and communication skills are practiced. Spontaneous conversations challenge students: Can they state their opinions clearly and defend their position? Their worldview will be challenged in this setting. Help them navigate these waters before moving out from under your roof.
Most of us assume our kids will take traditional classes but consider your on-line options. On-line opens up many more courses simply because you don’t have to be within driving distance. Designing a Clep Study Course
Don’t reinvent the wheel. Once you start utilizing free (or extremely low cost) books and materials on the web, you will quickly find your favorites. Here are two of my favorite websites where the “What do I use?” homework has already been done:
