Why CLEP in High School?
For each student, this question will be answered differently. Here are some reasons to discuss with your student:
- The first two years of college are generally a repeat of the same courses you just finished in high school.
You can accumulate dual credit … finish a course in high school and not have to repeat it in college. Avoid repeating the same subjects. - Save $$ on a college degree. This is a huge savings. One course, often three credits, costs under $100 if earned with Credit By Exam (CLEP or DSST). That same course will cost between $400-$3000 on a college campus.
- Shorten the time it takes to earn a degree. YOU determine the time it takes to earn your degree.
- Need to “prove” your academic skills to a selective school? Show you can achieve college-level work by documenting your Clep coursework on your high school transcript.
- Sharpen your world view by discussing the controversial topics that can be included in social science courses.
- Study at your own pace … whether that is accelerated, or slower than what is set in a college semester course.
- Learn the study skills NOW that are essential to being a successful student at college.
- Open up other opportunities with the time you save to build a strong resume: internship, study abroad, missions trip.
- Still spending 4 years on campus? Pick up a second major, learn a second language or take classes that just interest you.
