Hi Dave -
We found Intro to Psych is a good study for younger students because they are learning about themselves and they are very interested in that topic! That said, I did spend an enormous amount of time looking for a text that was age- and topic-appropriate. For this subject, the key was to assign tasks where the students put the information in various graphic organizers (charts, tables, comparison, etc) and I used a lot of video clips to teach specific concepts. High school students don't conceptualize as well as college-age, so it just has to be presented in a tangible way that they can relate to... visuals, stories, personal experiences, etc.

Hope that provides some ideas.

It's amazing that your children were able to pass the CLEP at such a young age! Did you find any of the official review books helpful? I run a similar site on studying for the CLEP exams. We're in the process of producing our free study guide on the introduction to psychology exam. We're only a few articles in but if you have time please take a look and let me know if you have any suggestions to make it easier to understand for younger learners. Thanks.

Comment on Career Tests: worth their weight in gold by Kelly Thomas

I wish I had read more job descriptions before choosing a course of study. What excites us in the classroom doesn’t always translate to the job. For one thing, no one checks up on you or gives you a midterm grade or holiday breaks. They tell you what to do, how they want it done, and expect to see results that sometimes take weeks to get. There is just that basic difference between student and employee.

I too have a research biology degree. Some of the job descriptions were 50% time looking into microscope – that means not talking to anyone for hours. I realized once I had been doing the same 3 week cycle of extractions for 26 weeks; I had gotten so efficient I was overlapping cycles. I quit counting after that! Research has an under lying need to repeat experiments over and over. This process takes years. The exciting parts represent years of mistakes and wrong turns and negative results; student labs are set up for success.

I was able to thrive on the precision and technical details of what I did. But later, I found that career focus was not as compatible with motherhood as I had hoped. Patients and sample timings are not interested in your childcare arrangements or a family get together. If I had broadened my degree to include a clinical certification, I would have had more career options that were more flexible in timing and location. Someone tried to tell me this once but I didn’t understand. Look at related careers for options that might better fit your personal goals. I recommend nursing and dental hygiene; both require technical skill but are very flexible while paying well.

Attending a Credits in High School workshop opened up a window for our daughter (family) that we would not have otherwise known of. Cheri Frame has a gift for breaking processes down into steps and helping us see its application and attainability. During a face-to-face consultation Cheri helped us see how we could really make those last years of high school add up to something extraordinary and save money in the future. Later with phone and email consults Cheri assisted us and our daughter by answering questions and guiding her to find information she needed to take ownership of her PSEO planning, CLEP prep and to slowly have the thrill of seeing her own education/degree/budget picture come together.

Our daughter, using what she learned from Cheri, managed to use CLEPs and PSEO to earn the credits needed to graduate from high school & junior college simultaneously with a HS diploma/ AA degree. We are really proud of all she has accomplished and so is she! Others want to know how we are doing this at such a young age and we tell them….contact Cheri Frame and attend a workshop! I have recommended Cheri also to adults wanting to attain a degree while working.

We plan to continue to counsel with Cheri and use her for a sounding board as our daughter (family) plans for the next steps towards a Bachelors and possible Masters. We do our best to spread the word about Cheri's workshop and services to others that they may benefit as we have.

THANK YOU Cheri….you have made such a difference in our lives!

These ideas and more have helped my daughter earn 78 credits via CLEP and DSST testing while still in high school. Those credits along with the PSEO program have enabled her to earn her AA degree AND an AS degree in Business from Anoka Ramsey Community College before completing high school. She is now an 18 year old Junior at St. Cloud State University majoring in accounting! So far no student debt has been accumulated and we are hoping for her to complete her college plans without any! Thank you, Cheri, for all you have done to get the ball rolling so students can afford a college education.

My daughter was in a CLEP study group that Cheri held and thoroughly enjoyed the process of preparing for the exam. Cheri provided motivation, taught study and test-taking skills as well as review of the subject matter. My daughter passed her exam thanks to Cheri’s efforts and has gone on to use the skills she learned in Cheri’s study group to take and pass seven other CLEP and DSST tests.
