What $100 Will Buy
Two tickets to a sporting event. Sushi for four. A fantastically fun day with friends. Three college credits. Which would your student choose?
Why CLEP? Because when you suggest CLEP, you are promoting a debt-free lifestyle.
Sometimes parents have to carry the vision for their student until they are mature enough to understand the freedom and flexibility that comes with being debt-free. Student loans are a drag, but what ninth grade student is thinking about college debt? It is only after they have graduated that the cost of college sinks in. According to a recent survey, finances are the leading cause of stress in a relationship. Nearly half of Americans would have trouble finding $400 to pay for an emergency. Worse, today’s newly married graduates can expect to owe $840 a month in joint student loans. ($35,000 each in student debt).
Bless your student and his/her future spouse with the peace that comes with being financially secure.
How can you help teens understand what $100 will buy? Start small.Teach financial stewardship early. If your teens are not paying their own cell phone bill, have them pay at least a portion of it. How about clothes, entertainment, and car insurance? Who is paying for college? Develop a family plan. As parents, we make financial decisions after our kiddos go to bed. Let them in on the choices you make each and every day to stay within your budget. Then, when you encourage them to spend a few weeks this summer preparing for the Algebra or Literature CLEP, they might just think that is a brilliant idea!
